April 4, 2012- There’s still time to register to be part of the Animal Agriculture Alliance’s eleventh annual Stakeholders Summit! The 2012 Summit will be held May 2-3 in Arlington, VA and will explore the timely theme of “Real Farmers Real Food: Celebrating Tradition and Technology”. The full Summit program is available at http://www.animalagalliance.org/register. Hurry- early registration ends April 16! Book your hotel room by April 6 for the best rates.
The event will include an innovative new session led by renowned science expert Shawn Lawrence Otto on May 3. His message – that the world’s major unsolved challenges revolve around science and that we need to help elected leaders avoid ideology and tackle these subjects before it is too late – will be sure to inspire the audience. This strategic session will help attendees learn the best way to communicate science to decision makers, consumers, and the media.
Otto is a science advocate and humanitarian who works for smarter politics on a global scale. He organized a national science debate between Barack Obama and John McCain that was the largest political initiative in the history of science, which has been emulated in several other nations. His book FOOL ME TWICE: Fighting the Assault on Science in America was published in October 2011.
Otto’s work has appeared in publications include Rolling Stone, Science, Salon, Huffington Post, New Scientist, and Scientific American. He is also the writer and coproducer of the Oscar-nominated film “House of Sand and Fog”. He writes for film and TV’s top studios, including DreamWorks, Lions Gate, and Starz.
More than 16 speakers will cover additional timely topics including agriculture’s voice in today’s media, communicating shared values across the food chain, and closing the “trust gap” using the power of the Internet. Innovative examples of consumer outreach programs, including PennAg Industries Association’s “Today’s Agriculture” exhibit and Indiana Pork Association’s work launching “Pig Adventure” at Fair Oaks Farm, will be highlighted. Other presenters will discuss lessons learned from Europe and tips to protect farmers’ rights at the state level here in the U.S.
Summit attendees are encouraged to stay for the adjunct legal workshop, which will offer response strategies to the growing challenge of activist-driven litigation. A group of respected legal professionals will offer case studies and opportunities for agriculture to unite. The workshop is being offered for a fee of $50.
The Summit and workshop will be held at The Westin Arlington Gateway hotel in Arlington, Virginia. Attendees should book rooms in the “Animal Agriculture Alliance” block at the special rate of $239 by visiting the hotel’s website or by calling (703) 717-6200 by Friday, April 6.
