Dietitians to ask “Does the Conversation Reflect the Cart?” at 2019 Summit

Farmer photo contest deadline extended through February 17

February 12, 2019 – The Animal Agriculture Alliance’s 2019 Stakeholders Summit themed, A Seat At The Table, will be held May 8-9 at the InterContinental at the Plaza Hotel in Kansas City, Missouri. Discounted registration rates are available through April 1. To view the agenda and register, visit http://summit.animalagalliance.org.

In the fast-paced world of social media, growers, farmers, producers and brands often hear from activists and vocal consumers about products and ingredients causing them to change how food is grown or processed. But are these perceived demands always reflected in actual purchases? Experienced retail dietitians Kim Kirchherr and Leah McGrath will examine the conversation around food and compare it to what actually ends up in the shopper’s cart and how stakeholders can get a better handle on this situation.

Kirchherr, RDN is an award-winning registered dietitian and a certified personal trainer. She has experience in agriculture, supermarket, media (traditional and social), hospital-based health and fitness centers, as well as outpatient medical nutrition therapy programs. She served as the Chair of the Food & Culinary Professionals Dietetic Practice Group (FCP) for 2017-2018 and has been chair of both the FCP Agriculture and Supermarket Subgroups. Kim is a past president of Illinois Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

McGrath, RD has been a registered dietitian since 1996. During her career she has worked as a dietitian in the Army, public health and as a supermarket dietitian. In 2010 she began visiting farms of all sizes to learn more about farming to be better equipped to answer customer questions about food and agriculture. To date she has visited more than 60 different farms. In 2014 she formed the social media movement known as “Buildup Dietitians” to act as a resource for nutrition professionals and to connect dietitians, nutrition students and dietetic technicians with science-based information and resources about food, farming and agriculture.
