Alliance Statement on HSUS Undercover Video, Kentucky

February 21, 2014 — The Animal Agriculture Alliance is deeply disturbed that the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) continues to encourage activists to misrepresent their identities, illicitly obtain employment on family farms, and surreptitiously obtain video footage, later distorted, and used to scare and confuse consumers.

The PEDv virus is serious and the pork industry, collectively, is working hard to find a way to stem the spread of the virus, which has so far affected over 3,500 farms in 25 states. Given the contagious nature of the virus, it is especially disappointing that HSUS would encourage its undercover activists to traipse from farm to farm to obtain footage—potentially contributing to the increased spread of the disease.

The entire animal agriculture community works diligently to ensure continuous improvement not only in terms of animal care, but also in ensuring the judicious use of antibiotics, maintaining sound environmental practices and securing the highest standards of food safety. To date, the pork industry has spent over one million dollars in an attempt to eradicate PEDv and improve animal care.

The Alliance encourages consumers with questions about food safety, animal care, or other issues relating to the production of meat, milk and eggs to reach out to farmers and ranchers as well as animal scientists and veterinarians.
